ETOS INITIATIVE: Ceremonial awarding of ETOS certificates to eight BiH schools

In the Catholic school center St. Josip in Sarajevo, on September 19, 2023, a ceremonial awarding of ETOS certificates for BiH schools took place. By diligently promoting ethos values: ethics, tolerance, openness and solidarity, a total of eight schools from Sarajevo, Tuzla and Mostar have acquired the condition for acquiring the ETOS certificate.

After the cooperation agreement was signed, the schools acquired the condition for ethos certification by implementing activities in the spirit of ethos values both in their classrooms and in local communities. Headed by coordinators, the following schools became ETOS schools:

  1. Catholic school center “St. Joseph” Sarajevo, coordinator Ivana Mijić Čavlović,
  2. High School for Textiles, Leather and Design Sarajevo, coordinator Alma Ahmethodžić,
  3. Third High School Sarajevo, coordinator Đuldina Kurtović,
  4. First Bosniak High School Sarajevo, coordinator Remzija Hurić-Bećirović,
  5. Elementary school “Brčanska Malta” Tuzla, coordinator Munevera Rahmanović Hrbat,
  6. Elementary school “Husino” Tuzla, coordinator Amela Petričević,
  7. Secondary Medical School Tuzla, coordinator Mirza Jahić,
  8. Middle School of Construction Mostar, coordinator Sanela Mesihović.

The director of the TPO Foundation, prof. Zilka Spahić Šiljak, PhD, saying that a lot of quality content was applied and that the teachers showed the importance of ETOS in the educational system. Since the certificates were awarded by the director of the TPO Foundation and the representative of the Weltethos Foundation, Mrs. Julia Willke, the ceremony was completed by her presence. Mrs. Willke states: “When awarding a certificate to the new Global Ethics School in Germany, I like to quote a famous German writer and journalist: Heribert Prantl.” I quote his speech: „Global Ethic – that’s a great, illustrious name. It is a name that also has something solemn about it. … But this foundation is not about the sublime. Global Ethic – that is not the tailcoat that one slips into once every holy time, on very special festive occasions. It is a working suit" that one wears every day and that has to prove itself in everyday life…. School is the place where worlds meet.“ I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart to your well-deserved certificates and wish you continued success and courage: continue on this path of ETOS together!“

During the manifestation students of the Catholic school center St. Josip performed two musical points. Professor of music culture, Ana Andrle Imamović, taught students: Ana Trlin (soloist), Dragana Juričić (piano accompaniment) and Lucija Dumančić (guitar accompaniment). During this meeting, videos prepared by the schools were shown. Through the videos, we were reminded of all the activities that were carried out.

When receiving the certificate, school principals and coordinators expressed their gratitude for the continuous encouragement as well as the enthusiasm of the students when it comes to activities that promote the ethos of values.

A certified Ethos school shows that it is committed to creating an environment in which differences are respected, in which responsible citizenship is nurtured and in which students are encouraged to dialogue and discuss in a spirit of respect for their interlocutors even when their views are opposed.
