P4C IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL “STARI ILIJAŠ” – “Lastavice”

Literary works are a stimulus for important, life lessons. Whether it is a story, a poem, a prose, no reading leaves us indifferent. We ask ourselves what if we happened to be in a similar situation, how would we react in certain circumstances, what is right and what is wrong behavior …

In the regional school Misoča (Elementary School “Stari Ilijaš”), teacher Vildana Polovina realized a philosophical questioning in the Bosnian language class. On March 18, 2022, students interpreted the literary text “Swallows” by Azra Mulalić. This stimulus encouraged students to form a philosophical question: “Why is happiness important?”

The class started with the game “Endless Story” with the help of a ball. Sentence after sentence, “woven” story. Rules are needed for every teaching activity, so the students devised the rules themselves so that the activities would be complete and flow naturally. The students enjoyed discussing the philosophical question, citing many examples from experience. With their critical and creative as well as empathic thinking, they cited metaphorical examples; that happiness: health, love, desires, colorful colors. This kind of abstract thinking is a consequence of the Philosophy for Children method – P4C.
