ETHOS INITIATIVE: 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM – Schools in Sarajevo Canton against violence

Five schools in Sarajevo Canton marked the “16 Days of Activism 2023” campaign again this year. schools implemented a series of activities with students and sent a clear message “Let’s say no to violence and discrimination”.

In the period from November 25, – December 10, 2023. Secondary School for Textiles, Leather and Design Sarajevo, Secondary School for Traffic and Communications Sarajevo, Third Gymnasium Sarajevo, High School Obala and Secondary Medical School Sarajevo realized five activities. The project was called “Let’s say NO to violence and discrimination”. The professors who represented the schools and led the activity were: Alma Ahmethodžić, Lejla Karahodžić, Marija Knežević, Igor Smiljanić and Esad Karahodžić.

On November 23, 2023, the first activity of the discussion entitled “Challenges faced by young people” was held in the amphitheater of the Third Gymnasium. At this activity, students highlighted the problems of nationalism, violence, stigmatization of victims of violence, peer violence, femicide and the pressure of society, which approaches young people, their wishes and needs without sufficient understanding and support.

The meeting “The place and significance of humanity in the modern world” took place in the premises of the High School for Textiles, Leather and Design. The students pointed out that factual life is in a challenging time, but that it is also an opportunity to express and show humanity. Young people have the feeling that the state does not have a vision for young people, nor does it support them adequately, that one should live for the future, not for the past, and build politics and the state on that.

The panel “Discrimination and gender-based violence as a cultural phenomenon” took place in the amphitheater of the Third Gymnasium. Before the start, Prof. Sedžida Hadžić, senior associate for the professional development of educators, teachers, professional associates at the Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education Sarajevo Canton and former professor of the Third gymnasium. After Prof. Hadžić’s address, the director of the Third Gymnasium, Amra Čolić, also addressed all those present. After the panel, an exhibition of posters entitled “Character and work of Hana Arendt” was presented. Student Ali Ohranović, from the Third Gymnasium, introduced all those present to the character and with the intellectual work of Hanna Arendt, after which the student of the High School for Traffic and Communications, Arnel Seferović, briefly presented the posters made by the students of the aforementioned school as well as the students of the Third Gymnasium.The theme of the exhibition was “Human Rights”.
