In the period from 19-20, June 2023, the third module of TOT training “Philosophy for Children – P4C” was held for teachers in the Canton Sarajevo. Once again, the participants carried out philosophical questioning in their own classrooms, and the third module began with a reflection on the experience they have gained.
Student feedback is mostly positive. According to the teachers, some are surprised because their opinion is being asked, others are delighted because they have the opportunity to speak openly about various social topics, and some feel afraid to express their own attitude towards current events. The foregoing speaks in favor of the fact that teaching methods that will encourage critical thinking in students are used to a lesser extent, and the encouragement of mechanical acquisition of knowledge is still faithfully followed.
After the reflections, the teaching staff had the opportunity to use the “Six Hats” teaching technique, which is ideal for working with students because it activates all levels of learning according to Bloom’s taxonomy of educational goals.
The second day of the training is dedicated to the discussion of work with teenagers and adolescents and the challenges that work entails. Also, the participants, in smaller groups, conducted philosophical questioning that dealt with topics such as “Is man the master of technology?”, “What gives us a sense of security?”, “Is and when is it justified to manage someone?”, “Is every motivation good?” and similar. The two-day training ended with reflections and agreements for the next meeting, when the official certification scheduled.
TOT trainings are implemented by the TPO Foundation in cooperation with the Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education Canton Sarajevo.
